Phase IV Expertise

Radar & Signal Processing

Phase IV capabilities in radar and signal processing are truly exceptional and represent one of the many things that make the organization stand out from those focused only on SETA support.

Since 1985, Phase IV has earned a great reputation for engineering and building high quality radar and signal processing solutions for the defense, aerospace and commercial sectors. The trust that our customers have vested in Phase IV is testimony to that reputation and continues today in a variety of radar and signal processing projects, a sampling of which is shown here.

Wake Vortex Radar - Phase IV

Wake Vortex Radar
  • Developed by Phase IV Systems in conjunction with the U.S. Army for NASA's Langley Research Center.
  • Supports the dynamic adjustment of aircraft spacing during arrival and departure to maintain safe operations and improve airport throughput.
  • Millimeter Wave Pulse-Doppler system designed to detect small scale atmospheric disturbance in inclement weather.

Phase IV - Target Injection Unit
Target Injection Unit
  • Developed for unit testing of the Sentinel radar system.
  • Target, clutter and noise signals, with various modulation characteristics, are injected into the radar receiver IF chain.

Phase IV - Radar Target Generator
Radar Target Generator
  • Developed for Calibration and Verification of Radar Systems
  • Provides far-field simulation of multi-target scenarios
  • Variable Range & Doppler Target
  • Both Helo and FW Target Models
  • RCS: -40 to 30 dBsm
  • RCS Resolution: .25 dBsm
  • Doppler: +/- 234 kHz
  • Doppler Resolution: 3.6 Hz
  • Range: 0.5 - 76.8 km
  • Range Resolution: 5 m

Phase IV - Fatboy Gimbaled Platform with Captive-Carry Hardware
Multimode Multisensor Suite
  • Developed a Ka-band sensor to be combined with 3 to 4 other sensors in a captive-carry mode for testbed data collection.
  • The sensor will incorporate MTI, STI, and HRR (6 inch range cell) SAR modes of operation.
  • A 4-channel monopulse antenna, 3 accelerometers, IMU, transmitter, exciter, 3 receiver channels, synchronous detector, and A/D converters will be housed in a volume of approximately 11" X 11" X 7". The data recording and signal processor hardware will reside in the aircraft.
  • The sensor will be used to collect SAR image data for use in detection of stationary and moving targets in clutter.

Waveform Generator/Return Simulator

Phase IV - Waveform Generator/Return Simulator
  • Developed by Phase IV Systems for the U.S. Army
  • Employed to test wideband waveform signal processors
  • Consists of two nearly identical units
    • Waveform generator
    • Transmit and reference waveforms
    • Return simulator
    • Return signals from complex targets
  • Clock speed tested up to 1.6 GHz
  • Updated version uses 12-bit I/Q samples
